rominent Chicago Author Luis Urrea has just won an Edgar Award–sponsored by the Mystery Writers of America to highlight the best writing in their genre–for his short story “Amapola,” published in the book Phoenix Noir.

Urrea Novel Chosen for 12th Volume of Powell’s Indiespensable

uis Urrea’s new novel Into the Beautiful North is being distributed through Powell’s Book’s Indiespensable, a subscription club that delivers popular new books with a focus on independent publishers.  Subscribers recieve a new book every six weeks, and according to them, the package often includes ” bonus DVDs or CDs, prepublication copies of books we’re looking forward to, mugs, posters, chocolate.”  The total cost of each shipment is $39.95.  This seems quite expensive, until you realize how much you get.  This particular package includes a signed hardcover first-edition of the book in addition to a ocally produced, autographed chapbook featuring the work of up-and-coming writers.

Future Urrea Novel Already on this Summer’s Reading Lists

ot that I’m sure how you’d manage to read it this summer, but Luis Urrea’s next novel, Mr. Mendoza’s Paintbrush, has somehow landed on PW.org’s Summer Reading List. The book is scheduled for release in 2010.  Urrea’s explaination:  “It’s magic!”

ust another quick highlight on Chicago superstar Luis Urrea: his newest book Into the Beautiful north has a review on Bookslut. Their verdict? The book is a magical adventure. “Urrea simultaneously explicates the seriousness of Mexican-US immigration while drolly narrating a Wizard of Oz-like circular fairy tale.”

Into the Beautiful North, written by celebrated Chicago author Luis Urrea, has been recieving rave reviews.  He recently sat down for an interview with Jonathan Messinger over at Time Out Chicago, in which he reveals that his new novel focuses on a feminist uprising in Mexico and that he wrote this book to laugh, citing the seriousness of his earlier works.

Into the Beautiful North is currently available from Little and Brown.

Local Author Luis Urrea on “This I Believe”

This I Believe” is an NPR program in which “Americans from all walks of life share the personal philosophies and core values that guide their daily lives,” recently featured Local Author Luis Urrea. You can read or listen to his essay, “Life is an Act of Literary Creation,” on their website.

Urrea is the author of many books.  His newest book, Into the Beautiful North, published by Little and Brown, is set to come out May 19th, and has already recieved some fantastic reviews.
