About Publish Chicago

It could be said that this blog was born out the search to answer the question—so artfully proposed by Avenue Q—“what do you do with an English major?” I moved to the city of Chicago during the summer of 2008 in order to pursue a career in the publishing industry, determined to put my BA in English literature to good use. Perhaps my quest seemed a bit futile because, as any publishing industry executive will tell you, the publishing industry is almost entirely located in New York City. I wanted to prove that a career in publishing wasn’t something that only New Yorkers could pursue. In my search for internships I discovered that, though the city has a publishing industry that’s alive and kicking, there was no comprehensive source to find out more about the industry or how it worked. Publish Chicago is my proposal to change that.

Since January of 2009 I’ve striven to undercover the major players in the publishing industry in Chicago and understand exactly how they go about doing business. I’ve interviewed publishing industry executives, successful writers, and publishing professionals. I’ve provided comprehensive reviews of various businesses, links to all the publishers I can find in the city, and a frequently updated list of books being published in Chicago.

This site can be used as a resource by all those interested in the publishing industry. I myself have used it as a resource to find a niche for myself in the industry, and others fresh from their grad or undergrad programs may find it useful in this way as well. Those in the industry can use this as a tool to discover just what is going on the city of Chicago in terms of publishing.

Publish Chicago is a map of an intensely complicated and constantly changing industry. It is a tool. It is an exploration.
