Fox News Blatantly Attacks Public Libraries, Asking “Are They a Waste of Tax Money?”

M

y level of disgust over this would be hard to approximate.  Despite rising rates of library attendance and the fact that libraries are fantastic resources for citizens of all stripes, Fox News is wondering if they’re a waste of our tax money.

I can think of many things our government has blown money on in the last, oh, ten years but libraries certainly are not one of them.

Not long ago, Glenn Beck warned that colleges and universities could be identified as big, bad socialists if they promoted “social justice.” It makes sense, then, that the network which airs his program would question the value of an institution that serves as one of the greatest resources for those who stand to benefit most from movements for social justice. Public schools have been under attack for some time now. (The number of public schools in New Orleans, for example, dropped from 123 to just four after Hurricane Katrina. They were largely replaced by charter schools.) I guess it was only a matter of time before libraries came under fire, too. Thanks for sharing this with those of us who don’t watch FOX.
