Headlining Time Out Chicago’s Books section this week is Jonathan Messinger’s review of Another New Calligraphy, a new independent and very small press run out of Chicago.
Powell’s Bookstore, which has several branches in Chicago (though its headquarters are in Portland), recently interviewed local author Luis Urrea about his most recent novel Into the Beautiful North. They also have released the finalists from their Six-Word Memoir Contest. Honestly, I have to say I’m a bit dissapointed with the results. Given the vast amount of poetic talent that exists just in Chicago alone, I find it strange that an easy joke about making a screwdriver or mild joke about sex tops the list, but you can decide for yourself.
The finalists for the 2009 Great Lakes Book Awards include an abundance of Chicago authors. What isn’t there an abundance of? Chicago publishers.
Two tidbits from the University of Chicago: 1. The Baffler is making a comeback, and 2. two undergrads are writting a book entitled Twitterature: The World’s Greatest Books, Now Presented in Twenty Tweets or Less, which as been picked up by Penguin.
And finally, in case anybody missed it, Chicago Public Radio has a fantastic interview featuring Danielle Chapman of the DCA, Ivan R. Dee, Jonathan Messinger, and a few other big names in Chicago Publishing about the future of the industry in the city.
