A Bump in the Road Author Turns her Life into Her Novel
aureen Lipinski, author of A Bump in the Road, recently sat down for an interview with the Chicago Sun-Times. One of the most interesting things we found in the interview is the fact that she decided to write a novel about a woman going through an unexpected pregnancy while she herself had never had any children, and subsequently during the book’s production found herself unexpectedly pregnant. Even more interesting, though, is the fact that her main character’s life seems to match her own to an almost uncannily autobiographical degree (for fiction). Both the author and the the main character, Clare Finnegan, are, as the Sun-Times article puts it, “famous bloggers, professional event planners and newlywed party-hearty girls.” Still, the book looks interesting for fans of chick lit. I am wondering what the implications are of authors basically re-describing their own life stories as fictional accounts. I wonder, have these authors ever heard of writers like David Sedaris? He makes a killing from doing nothing other than writing stories about himself and his family.
A Bump in the Road was published June 9, 2009, by St. Martin’s Griffin.

Ah, but then I wouldn’t get to protect myself with the guise of writing “fiction.” And while some aspects are autobiographical, I’m sadly not a famous blogger, nor am I an event planner by trade. The “newlywed party-hearty girl” I’ll take.

Hm, it seems that my issue is with the Sun-Times article rather than the novel itself (is it shoddy journalism week and nobody told me?). Interested readers, especially fans of chick lit, should definitely check out Maureen’s blog for an idea of what the book is like. I’m finding her writing to be hilarious and entertaining. The link is in the article, but in case you’d like another, here it is: http://www.nowthatyoumentionit.typepad.com/

Thanks for the props. Maybe someday my blog will become famous–and to clarify, I work in fundraising, which occasionally involves planning events, but it’s not the focus of my job at all.
But I absolutely loved the article in the Sun Times!
