Borders to Close its Michigan Ave. Store
Publishers Weekly recently published this article on borders closing it’s flagship Michigan Avenue store. According to Steve Davis, Border’s Senior VP , “It’s a difficult decision to close a store and we’ve done all that we can to keep this location open, but like a handful of other stores we have recently closed in cities ranging from Cincinnati to Santa Monica, this store has not met our profit objectives for some time now. Therefore, we have no choice but to close the store in 2010.”
Pretty harsh. Of course, we Chicagoans can still shop at the many other Borders in town, including the massive one located at State and Lake, just a short ride on the red line from the Border’s on Michigan Ave. Still, as the article says, even independent booksellers are mourning the loss of the store because of what it represents for the publishing industry, and because of what it may do to publishers that are already unstable because of the economy.
Tough times, tough times.

*sigh*
Okay, I understand if a company has overextended itself and needs to restructure/downsize. I don’t necessarily like it, but I understand. But what I don’t understand is this: If the condition of the economy has forced Americans to do with less, then why not do without the video consoles at $200 and games that cost at least $50 each, or that 42″ HD TV? Let’s go “old school” and entertain ourselves with a book (And not on an electronic device). We need to relearn being tactile, engage both our senses of sight and touch–and patronize the bookstores. And those of us who do patronize the stores, must cut back on merely sprawling on the floor reading the books. WE NEED TO BUY A BOOK.
